The schools of ENSTA Group, associated with prestigious industrial partners, have combined their skills to offer benchmark training in the engineering of multi-sensor systems, applied to the defence and aeronautics sectors. The Advanced Master in Geo-Locating and Multi-Sensor Systems Engineering: security, internet of things, aeronautics, intelligence (ILEMS) is the benchmark course for autonomous systems and multi-sensor technologies par excellence that make up all defence programmes, in particular integrating geo-locating and navigation functions.

Presentation of the Advanced Master in Geo-Locating and Multi-Sensor Systems Engineering

The businesses in the fields rely on the major expertise of the engineering schools of Techniques Avancées to train their employees and develop their innovation capacities. This is a recent course (2013), unique in Europe, where all the classes are provided by engineers working in the largest French businesses in the field (SAGEM, Thalès, Dassault, ONERA, Airbus Defense, MBDA, DGA, IXBlue, Orange, Renault).

Objectives of the course

The course objectives focus on the design, implementation and maintenance of technological systems in the following areas:

  • inertial unit
  • geolocation;
  • complex navigation function;
  • functional guide chain;
  • use of sensors, information fusion, choice of sensors;
  • cybersecurity
  • intelligence
  • optronic warfare (countermeasures, decoy);
  • radar;
  • communications for defence

Course content

This involves training engineers in the design and sizing of autonomous multi-sensor systems in an intelligence and defence context, with a focus on a complete chain of location-navigation. The studies start from the definition of the characteristics of the sensors (accelerometers, etc.) and their interactions through ad-hoc networks, up to the complete operation of an inertial unit and the navigation functions, particularly in the field of aeronautics. Geo-locating, particularly with satellite networks (GPS, Galileo) and the role of hybrid navigation through data fusion are also at the heart of the professions targeted by the ILEMS Advanced Master.
The training also covers Engineering (Pragmatic signal and image processing, electronic and optronic warfare), Project Management and Systems Engineering in order to design long-lasting embedded modules.

The theoretical training of 490 hours during the first 5 months is validated through various projects. A company mentor is chosen at the start of the year and the link with the professional world is strengthened through various business visits. The business internship, lasting 6 months (from the end of February) allows the student to validate the acquired knowledge. It is sanctioned by the drafting of a professional thesis and a defence before a panel, which takes place no later than one month following the end of the internship.

Professional opportunities

The main activities related to the ILEMS domain are:

  • systems engineering related to domains;
  • design and operation of devices and systems;
  • project management;
  • research, development and innovation.

Holders of the Advanced Master interact within a project team, which they eventually manage. They are able to design all or part of the domain system. From a set of customer requirements, they propose a system architecture and dimension the components of this architecture. They are able to manage the creation and maintenance of this type of system. Over the course of their careers, they advance to the position of project manager in the field and technical expert.

Admission requirements

This Advanced Master is open to applicants holding a Bac + 5 engineering degree, Master 2 or equivalent degree and possibly a Bac + 4 degree with significant professional experience in the field.
